  I'm going quite aggressive with Benfica here and taking them to win 4-0. Académico Viseu deserve huge credit for earning promotion, but this is about as difficult a first league assignment as they could have been handed. Benfica are operating on a completely different level and their home scoring numbers have been frightening recently, putting five past St Gallen before hitting Hearts for six. There's also an interesting historical trend in this fixture, with Académico never scoring away to Benfica and previous visits producing some very comfortable home victories. Benfica are unbeaten across an enormous run of league matches and have enough attacking quality to punish a newly-promoted side once spaces begin appearing. Viseu might make this competitive early by sitting deep and keeping numbers behind the ball, but maintaining that for 90 minutes is another matter entirely. If Benfica score relatively early, I think the floodgates could eventually open.

  I'm going against a very obvious trend here and backing Gil Vicente to beat Rio Ave 2-0. The last four league meetings between these sides have all finished as draws, so 1-1 will understandably be a popular correct-score selection, but I think Gil's home advantage can finally break that sequence. Their home performances have been considerably stronger than their overall form suggests, winning five of their previous ten league games there and averaging close to two goals per match. Rio Ave's away numbers tell a different story, with five defeats in their previous ten on the road and an average of less than one goal scored per game. That lack of attacking output is why I'm taking the chance on Gil keeping the clean sheet rather than automatically going for both teams to score. It's certainly the riskiest selection of these four, but the home/away split gives me enough confidence to oppose another draw.

  I'm firmly with Braga here and I think 2-0 is the score that makes the most sense. There aren't many head-to-head records stronger than this one, with Braga winning the last ten meetings between these sides and also dominating the fixture over a much longer period. Moreirense's lack of goals is what pushes me towards a Braga clean sheet as well. They've averaged below a goal per game across their recent league matches and their scoring numbers at home haven't been much better. Braga are far more dangerous going forward and have won five of their previous ten league away games, so even with European commitments to think about I still believe they have enough quality to control this. Moreirense may keep the game tight for a while, but if Braga get themselves ahead they're exactly the sort of side who can manage the situation before finding another on the counter.
